Kitchen remodeling in Studio City.

Master Kitchen serves Studio City's 1930s and 1940s houses, its hillside homes and its new construction. A full kitchen remodel typically costs $35,000 to $75,000, and the work in the home averages 2–3 weeks.

Kitchens in Studio City.

Studio City takes its name from the film studio Mack Sennett began building here in 1927, and many of its houses followed in the 1930s and 1940s. In Colfax Meadows and the streets around it there are Spanish and traditional homes from those years.

Their kitchens were small on purpose, and most have been reworked at least once. South of Ventura Boulevard the homes are hillside houses, many of them mid-century, with kitchens on whichever level the slope allowed.

Studio City also sees steady new construction, where an older house gives way to a two-story home with an open kitchen at the back.

What a remodel in Studio City has to allow for.

Character worth keeping
Arched openings, plaster walls and original windows are often why the house was bought. In our Hollywood project the kitchen was planned around the home's original arches instead of through them.
Small footprints
Where the room cannot grow, drawers, a pantry wall and a peninsula do the work an island would.
Old wiring and plumbing
Houses of this age often still have original wiring and pipe behind the kitchen walls.
Hillside kitchens
On a slope, access, parking and structure all limit what can move.

Permits in Studio City.

Kitchen remodel permits for Studio City are issued by LADBS, because Studio City is part of the City of Los Angeles. The department's Valley office is the Van Nuys Development Services Center at 6262 Van Nuys Boulevard, and express permits are also available online. An express permit, issued without plan check, covers a kitchen remodel with no structural changes, which describes most projects that keep an older kitchen's footprint. Opening a bearing wall in a 1930s house moves the project into plan check.

The scope that usually fits.

In an older Studio City house the usual project replaces everything in the room: cabinets, stone, backsplash, flooring, lighting and the wiring and plumbing behind them. That is a full kitchen remodel at $35,000 to $75,000, and it covers opening the kitchen to the next room where the house allows it. Our Shaker door styles suit these houses, and full-custom cabinetry, for details the catalog does not offer, brings the project to $75,000 to $100,000 or more.

What each scope includes

Questions from Studio City homeowners.

Who issues kitchen remodel permits in Studio City?

LADBS, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, because Studio City is part of the City of Los Angeles. Its Valley office is the Van Nuys Development Services Center at 6262 Van Nuys Boulevard. The permit and the inspections are part of what Master Kitchen manages.

Can a small Studio City kitchen fit an island?

Sometimes. An island needs clear walkways on every side, and many older kitchens cannot spare them. A peninsula gives much of the same counter space and seating in less room. Our Hollywood project uses a marble waterfall peninsula facing the breakfast table.

Can you keep the original arches and windows in a Studio City kitchen?

Yes, and it is usually worth doing. The kitchen is planned around the features that give the house its character. In our Hollywood project the room was designed around the home's original arched openings instead of through them.
